Psilocybe cyanescens (Wavy Cap)
The most iconic PNW species. Named for its distinctive wavy, caramel-to-chestnut cap, Psilocybe cyanescens fruits prolifically on wood chips and bark mulch — which means it turns up in gardens, landscaping beds, and parks as readily as in forests. Perhaps the most famous PNW species, Psilocybe azurescens is concentrated around the Columbia River estuary on the northern Oregon coast, where it grows on dune grasses and woody debris in sandy soil. Psilocybe allenii
A close look-alike of cyanescens, Psilocybe allenii was only formally described in 2012. It occurs along the coast from British Columbia to California, often in urban wood-chip beds, and is most reliably separated from cyanescens by microscopic features rather than by eye.
Psilocybe stuntzii (Blue Ringed)
Psilocybe stuntzii grows on wood chips, bark, and grassy areas across the PNW and is notable for the persistent ring on its stem. It carries an important warning: it has historically been confused with the deadly Galerina, which shares its habitat — a mistake covered below.
Psilocybe cyanofibrillosa
A rarer coastal species found on woody debris and disturbed ground along the PNW coast, rounding out the region's wood-loving lineup.
The Deadly Look-Alike: Galerina marginata
This is the single most important thing to understand about PNW mushrooms. Galerina marginata — the “funeral bell” — is a wood-rotting mushroom that contains the same amatoxins as the death cap, and it grows in the very same wood-chip beds, at the same time of year, as Psilocybe cyanescens and azurescens. To the untrained eye, a small brown Galerina and a small brown wood-loving Psilocybe can look alike.
