What Is a Spore Syringe?
A spore syringe holds mature mushroom spores suspended in a sterile solution — usually distilled water. Spores are the microscopic reproductive cells a mushroom releases, and under magnification they are the starting point for studying a species’ color, shape, size, and surface detail.
Because Psilocybe spores contain no psilocybin, they are legal to study for microscopy in most areas. A spore syringe differs from a liquid culture, which holds living mycelium rather than spores.
Preparing a Slide for Microscopy
Work on a clean, still surface with a fresh glass slide and coverslip. A few simple habits keep your view clear and your syringe uncontaminated for next time.
What to Look For
Color — Psilocybe spores are purple-brown to nearly black; Panaeolus jet-black; Amanita white
Shape — usually ellipsoid to sub-ellipsoid
Size — measured in microns (µm) with a calibrated reticle
Germ pore — a small pore at one end, visible at higher magnification

Are mushroom spore syringes legal?
Psilocybe spores contain no psilocybin and are legal for microscopy research under U.S. federal law, though some states and cities restrict them. We do not ship Psilocybe syringes to Georgia or Idaho. Always check your local laws.
Why is my spore syringe cloudy or clumpy?
Some cloudiness or visible spore clumping is normal, especially in dense syringes — simply shake to re-suspend before use. Our anti-clumping blend keeps the view clearer.
How long does a spore syringe last?
Stored cold and dark, spores stay viable for many months — often a year or more. Warmth, light, and freezing all shorten that window.
Should I choose multi-spore or isolated?
Choose multi-spore to observe natural genetic variation, or isolated for a single, consistent, repeatable lineage.
Can I use a spore syringe to grow mushrooms?
