Tidal Wave is a celebrated hybrid strain of Psilocybe cubensis, created by crossing Penis Envy with B+ — combining the dense structure of one parent with the broad caps and coloration of the other. It's prized for its vibrant pigmentation, genetic stability, aggressive colonization, and the undulating, wave-like cap margins that give the strain its name.

Origin & Genetics
Tidal Wave is a modern hybrid — it does not occur in the wild. It was developed by the cultivator known as Doma of Magic Myco around 2017–2020, by crossing two of the most influential names in cubensis genetics: Penis Envy, known for its dense mycelium and thick, stout stems, and B+, valued for its broad, adaptable caps and heavy spore deposition.
Where most “hybrids” in the mushroom world are anecdotal claims with no paper trail, Tidal Wave's lineage is reasonably well documented — which is a large part of why it has become such a useful reference point for studying how two parent strains combine. The name itself comes from its most striking feature: as fruits mature, their cap edges can develop undulating, wave-like margins reminiscent of ocean swells. Some specimens also show a small pale “ball” or knot on the cap — a quirk inherited from the B+ side.
Tidal Wave didn't stop at the original cross. Working with it further, the Magic Myco team isolated a series of variants and mutations — the basis for the lineage family described below.
What It Inherits From Each Parent
From Penis Envy
Dense mycelium and a thick, stout stipe; unusual, robust morphology; the pronounced blue bruising common to the PE line. Tidal Wave's structural heft comes largely from this side.
From B+
Broad, adaptable caps and golden-brown to caramel coloration; heavy spore deposition; a tendency toward color variation across a single fruiting — and the occasional pale “ball” on the cap.
The result is a strain that reads as a genuine blend: B+'s cap character and sporulation carried on Penis Envy's dense architecture. How to Recognize Tidal Wave
Cap (pileus): ranges from convex when young to wavy and irregular at maturity — the “tidal” character that names the strain. Caps are often asymmetric, sometimes ruffled at the edges, and run golden-brown to caramel, frequently with more color variation across a single fruiting than you'd see on a plainer cubensis.
Stem (stipe): thicker and denser than a typical cubensis, inheriting Penis Envy's stout character. Stems are usually in the 80–130 mm range — somewhat shorter than B+ on average — and show pronounced blue bruising on handling, a common cubensis identification cue.
Gills: dense and well-defined, shifting from gray to deep purple-brown at maturity — a cleaner gill structure than Penis Envy, which can show irregular development.
Veil: develops more reliably than Penis Envy's, so most Tidal Wave fruits present a proper veil — another small tell that separates it from its parent.
Under the Microscope
Tidal Wave spores are a dark purple to black, thick-walled, and noted for strong viability — giving excellent contrast and definition on the slide. In size they run roughly 12–18 × 8–12 µm, which places them among the larger-spored cubensis strains — noticeably larger than Golden Teacher and slightly larger than B+ itself.
Shape: broadly ellipsoid, often with a slightly truncated or angular profile, and typically less symmetrical than Golden Teacher — the Penis Envy parentage showing through in the irregularity. That variability is part of what makes the strain rewarding to document: there's real phenotypic range to observe from slide to slide.
Researchers often note the strain's atypical morphology — dense gill arrangements, thick stipes, and the occasional cap “knot” — as some of the more interesting features to examine when studying spores under a microscope.
The Tidal Wave Lineage Family
The original cross was only the beginning. As the Magic Myco team continued working with Tidal Wave, they isolated mutations and variants, each with its own character — giving the mycology community a growing family of related strains to study. Among them are Tidal Wave 2, Tidal Wave 3 (Beast), Tidal Wave 4, Tidal Wave 5 (a leucistic isolation), and BXO.
The most famous descendant, though, is Enigma — a striking mutation with a dense, brain-coral-like form. Enigma is remarkable precisely because of what it doesn't do: it produces no spores at all. It never forms a normal cap or gills, so there's nothing to drop a print. The only way to propagate it is to clone tissue from a mature fruit onto agar, then into liquid culture — which is why you'll find Enigma offered as an isolate rather than a spore syringe. Brainiac is another well-known mutation in the same web of genetics.
For collectors, that makes Tidal Wave a kind of genetic hub — a documented, stable hybrid that also stands as the parent of some of the most talked-about phenotypes in modern cubensis study.
