Know What's Growing — Before It Spreads

Green fuzz on a plate, a sour jar, a murky culture — contamination happens to everyone. Here's how to recognize the common culprits and what to do next.

Contamination is any unwanted organism — a mold, bacterium, or yeast — growing where only your intended culture should be. It competes for the same nutrients, spreads fast, and can ruin a plate, jar, or liquid culture long before fruiting.

The good news: the common contaminants are easy to learn by sight. This guide covers each one, plus what a healthy liquid culture and clean agar work should look like instead.

Why Early Identification Matters

Contaminants reproduce faster than mushroom mycelium. A speck of green today is a fully sporulating colony in days — and once a contaminant sporulates, opening the container can seed everything nearby. Catching it early protects the rest of your library, your workspace, and your future projects.

The rule experienced growers live by: when in doubt, throw it out — sealed, straight to the outdoor trash. No plate or jar is worth contaminating a whole lab over.

The Common Contaminants

Trichoderma (Green Mold)

The most common contaminant in mycology. It starts as fast-moving white growth that's easy to mistake for mycelium — then turns unmistakable forest-green as it sporulates, often in rings or patches. It outraces mushroom mycelium easily. Once you see green, the container is done: discard it sealed.

Cobweb Mold

Wispy, gray, and cobweb-like, sitting loosely on top of the surface rather than gripping it. It grows shockingly fast — visibly spreading day to day — and can blanket a surface in under a week. The tell vs. healthy mycelium: cobweb is dull gray and fluffy-loose; mycelium is bright white and holds the surface.

Bacterial Contamination (Wet Spot / Sour Rot)

Bacteria don't look fuzzy — they look wet, slimy, or greasy. On grain, watch for glossy, mucus-like kernels that never colonize; on agar, slick dull streaks or a filmy sheen. The signature is the smell: sour, like something fermenting that shouldn't be.

Black Pin Mold (Rhizopus)

Coarse, fast gray growth that raises tiny black pinheads on thin stalks — like a field of dressmaker's pins. It matures and sporulates within days, so it's often already dropping spores by the time you spot it. Discard sealed and review your sterile technique.

A Contaminated Liquid Culture

Healthy LC grows as distinct white clouds or clumps of mycelium in clear-ish broth. Trouble looks like uniform murkiness through the whole jar, a sour or off smell when working with it, unusual pressure, or strands that break apart into haze. If the broth itself has gone cloudy and the “growth” has no structure, treat it as bacterial and discard. See what a liquid culture should look like.

Handle Contamination Safely

Don't open a suspect container to sniff it. Sporulating molds release clouds of spores the moment the lid comes off.

• Discard contaminated plates and jars sealed, in outdoor trash — don't compost them or open them indoors.

• Mold spores can irritate airways and trigger allergies in sensitive people — work clean and wash up after handling anything suspect.

• A one-time contamination is normal. The same contaminant repeatedly means a process problem — revisit your sterile technique.

Preventing the Next One

Almost all contamination traces back to airflow, unsterile tools, or an unclean workspace. A still air box is the single biggest upgrade for clean transfers; pouring your own agar plates lets you quarantine and verify cultures before committing them to grain. Flame-sterilize tools between every transfer, and store cultures properly so healthy ones stay that way.

Contamination FAQ

Can I save a contaminated culture?

Generally no — once a contaminant is established, it's already shed cells or spores beyond what you can see. On agar it's sometimes possible to transfer clean growth well ahead of a contaminant, but for jars, substrates, and liquid cultures the safe answer is to discard sealed and start fresh.

Is green mold dangerous to people?

Trichoderma mainly threatens your cultures, but any sporulating mold can irritate airways or trigger allergies — another reason to keep suspect containers closed and discard them sealed.

Why did my liquid culture turn cloudy?

Uniform cloudiness usually means bacteria — healthy mycelium grows as defined white clumps, not haze. A sour smell confirms it. Cloudy plus sour: discard, review sterile technique, and start again.

White fuzz — mycelium or mold?

Young Trichoderma and cobweb both start whitish. The tells: mushroom mycelium is bright white and grips its surface; cobweb is gray-tinged, loose, and visibly faster; Trichoderma gives itself away when green appears. When you truly can't tell, isolate the container and watch it for 24–48 hours.
