Basidiospores are the reproductive cells behind the mushrooms you know best. Here's what they are, how they form, and why they matter under the microscope.
A basidiospore is the type of spore produced by fungi in the phylum Basidiomycota — formed on the outside of a club-shaped cell called a basidium. They're the spores made by most familiar mushrooms: the gilled caps, the brackets, the puffballs.

What Is a Basidiospore?
Fungi that make basidiospores are called basidiomycetes — the “club fungi.” This huge group includes nearly all the mushrooms people recognize: oysters, cubensis, button mushrooms, shelf fungi, and more. The name comes from the basidium, the microscopic club-shaped cell on which these spores form.
Basidiospores develop on the fertile surface of a mushroom — the gills of a cap, the pores of a bracket, the teeth of a toothed fungus. When mature, they're released to drift away and, with luck, start new fungal growth.
How Basidiospores Form
Each basidium usually produces four basidiospores, held out on tiny stalks called sterigmata at the tip of the club. They form externally — on the outside of the basidium — which is one of the defining features of this group.
When ready, many basidiomycetes forcibly discharge their spores into the air with a remarkably precise little catapult mechanism, launching them clear of the gill so air currents can carry them away. Multiply that across every basidium on every gill, and a single mushroom sheds spores by the billions.

The two great groups of spore-making fungi differ in how — and where — they build their spores.

Why Basidiospores Matter for Microscopy
To a mycologist, basidiospores are a fingerprint. Their size, shape, color, surface texture, and ornamentation are some of the most reliable features for telling species apart — which is exactly why studying them under magnification is the heart of mushroom taxonomy.
Even a spore print's color — white, brown, black, purple — is a basidiospore trait used in identification. The spores suspended in a spore syringe are basidiospores, ready for exactly this kind of study.
From there, the story is the same as any spore: a basidiospore that germinates grows into mycelium, which colonizes and eventually fruits into a new mushroom — which forms fresh basidiospores of its own, and the cycle continues.
