You can truly count on Pink Oyster (Pleurotus djamor) to be a rapid colonizer and a fun fruiter. Pink Oysters adjust to a range of environments without being too fussy, which makes them perfect for anyone just starting gourmet mushroom growing at home. It's a resilient mushroom during its growing cycle — but once harvested, you'll need to consume or dehydrate your Pink Oysters within approximately 3 days.

1What Grains Should I Use?
Pink Oyster mushrooms enjoy starting on rye and 5-grain for best results. You may also opt for oats, corn, or straw.
Pro Tip
- ALWAYS use sterilized grain. This helps tremendously when avoiding contamination. Use trusted kit companies like midwestgrowkits.com or mycolabs.com for rye or 5-grain bags/jars.
- You may also sterilize grains from home! Just be sure to cook them for the appropriate times depending on your grain ratio.
2How Do I Inoculate?
This is a super easy part of growing Pink Oysters. We recommend a still-air box (SAB), laminar flow hood, or even the oven-door method for inoculation. You'll need isopropyl alcohol, paper towels, vinyl gloves, grain bags/jars, and your Pink Oyster liquid culture syringe.
Be sure to check how many cc's to inject into your grain based on the jar/bag you're using.
- Put on your vinyl gloves, spray down your workspace, and when finished, spray your gloves down with alcohol.
- Use the provided alcohol swabs to wipe down the injection port at the bottom of your grain bags or on top of your grain jar lid.
- Take the cap off your Pink Oyster liquid culture syringe and pop on the provided sterile needle. You're ready to inject!
Pro Tip
After puncturing the port, hold your syringe at a 45° angle and carefully give the bag/jar a 360° spin to help spread the LC around.
(With grain jars you can go further and shake the jar vigorously after inoculating — this won't harm the liquid culture.)
3Colonization
Pink Oyster (Pleurotus djamor) is a tropical mushroom. It thrives best at 70–78°F from inoculation all the way down to fruiting.
They can withstand a bit more heat if temperatures rise, and it isn't harmful to go below 70°F — that just tends to slow growth in cooler climates. No worries though: Pink Oyster happily bounces back once brought to normal temperatures.
Pink Oyster will amaze you with how quickly it colonizes — usually full colonization in about 1–2 weeks. Give your bags/jars a break-and-shake once ~50% of the grains are covered in mycelium. Don't panic if you notice areas of the mycelium turn a pink hue — that's totally normal for Pink Oyster.
It can sit in darkness during this time — no need to worry about humidity or light. Check the bag daily for contamination. You can safely expose it to light while checking (a common question) — we promise it won't hurt the mycelium.
- Grain bags: cut the tape holding the top, let it stand tall, and do a break-and-shake so colonized grain disperses further. Reshape into its block form and let nature do the rest.
- Jars: simply shake the jar to disperse the colonized grains.
Watch your temps. If your mycelium is stalling, check whether it's too cold or too hot — big temperature swings can throw off the mycelium. Never fret: with daily observations you'll catch these things early and fix them.
4Transferring to Substrate
Pink Oyster works best in a mixture of hardwood sawdust and soy hull — this combination is typically called Master's Mix.
RULE OF THUMB — one colonized grain bag can be split among 6 bags of Master's Mix. For quicker colonization, split between 2.
Pink Oyster won't benefit from a monotub bulk grow — this mushroom needs only specific spots to grow from. When the mycelium produces those beautiful shelf-like Pink Oysters we all love, it only needs a few spots exposed to oxygen so it directs its energy there. So Pink Oysters should be grown in a bag, bucket, or log-inoculation setting. Below we cover bag methods.
- Put on vinyl gloves and spray down your workspace with isopropyl alcohol. Spray the outside of your colonized grain bags/jars and Master's Mix bag, and let dry.
- Cut the top of your colonized grain bag and Master's Mix bags, then pour your colonized grains into the Master's Mix bag.
- Heat-seal the top, or use clips, rubber bands, or zip ties to keep it closed. Leave some air inside to allow room to shake next.
- Shake the bag vigorously to disperse and break all colonized grains into the substrate.
- Other than a break-and-shake at ~50% coverage, there's little to do this phase — keep it dark and observe daily for contamination.
There's no need for air exchange right now — this mushroom still needs CO₂ to colonize again.
5The Fruiting Stage
Hooray for getting this far in the life cycle of your Pink Oyster! Soon all your hard work will pay off.
Once your Master's Mix bags are colonized and ready, there are a couple of methods to bring these mushrooms to viable life.
These apply to every method below:
- 8–12 hours of light per day. Sunlight isn't necessary but works — rotate the cake each day. LED or any overhead light gives directional growth.
- Spray your cakes once daily. In a drier climate/home, you may need to spray 2–3 times daily.
- Aim for 80%+ humidity.
- Fresh air exchange differs per method (below).
- After your first flush, rehydrate for a second/third flush by dunking your block in water for 18–24 hours. Don't exceed 24 hours or the cake disintegrates.
Method 1 — Fruiting Chamber
Set your bag up in a fruiting chamber — a monotub, tote, or any enclosed space where you can introduce humidity, light, and oxygen for your Pink Oysters. This is especially effective because Pink Oyster fruits well in bags inside a humidity-controlled chamber, reducing the need for more complex methods. Keeping it simple can be wonderful!
If the bag top is heat-sealed, cut it open to spray water on the cake easily, then clip it closed when done.
Using a monotub? Put the filter patches on to help with fresh air exchange.
No holes for fresh air? That's okay — leave the lid open for a few minutes 2–3 times a day to release CO₂ and introduce fresh air.
Method 2 — Automated Tent
A streamlined way to fruit in the best environment is to place your fully colonized cakes into an automated grow tent. You don't need to invest in a dedicated tent just for Pink Oyster, but if you already own one it's a great tool — just make sure any other mushrooms sharing the tent have compatible climate needs.
To promote fresh air exchange (FAE), periodically open the tent's door. Enhance the setup with a fan connected to the tent to draw in outside air — this ensures your Pink Oysters get the oxygen they need for healthy fruiting.
Automate it with a timer for 15 minutes every 3–4 hours. Observe and adjust based on humidity — aim for 80%+.
You won't need to worry much about contamination here unless cakes go above 80°F (a danger zone) or stagnant water sits at the bottom of your bags for days. It's normal for water/yellow liquid to collect at the bottom — just dump out excess whenever you notice it.
