Pearl Oysters (Pleurotus ostreatus var. Pearl) are reliable growers all year long, with a fruiting temperature range of 65–75°F and natural adaptability to shifting conditions in the wild. 1What Grains Should I Use?
Pearl Oyster mushrooms grow great on rye or 5-grain for best results. If prepared correctly, you may also use oats, corn, or rice.
Pro Tip
- ALWAYS use sterilized grain. This helps tremendously when avoiding contamination.
- Use trusted kit companies like MidwestGrowKits.com or MycoLabs.com for rye or 5-grain bags/jars.
- You may also sterilize grains from home — just cook them for the appropriate times depending on the ratio of grain you're sterilizing.
2How Do I Inoculate?
This is a super easy part of growing Pearl Oysters. We recommend a still-air box (SAB), laminar flow hood, or even the oven-door method. You'll need isopropyl alcohol (or alcohol wipes), paper towels, vinyl gloves, grain bags/jars, and your Pearl Oyster liquid culture syringe.
Be sure to check how many cc's to inject into your grain based on the jar/bag you're using.
- Put on your vinyl gloves and spray down your workspace with isopropyl alcohol. When finished, spray your gloves and let everything dry.
- Use the provided alcohol swabs to wipe down the injection port at the bottom of your grain bags or on top of your grain jar lid.
- Shake your syringe vigorously.
- Take the cap off your Pearl Oyster liquid culture syringe and pop on the provided sterile needle. You're ready to inject!
Pro Tip
- After puncturing the port, hold your syringe at about a 45° angle and carefully give the bag/jar a full 360° spin. This helps spread the LC around more evenly.
- With grain jars you can go further and shake the jar vigorously after inoculating — this won't harm the liquid culture.
3Colonization
Pearl Oyster is a subtropical mushroom but can also withstand cooler temperatures. For colonization, keep your grains around 70–80°F for best results.
Pearl Oyster will amaze you with how aggressively it colonizes — expect full colonization in roughly 2 weeks. Give your bags/jars a break and shake once about 50% of the grains are covered in mycelium.
It can sit in darkness during this time — no need to worry about humidity or light. Check the bag daily for contamination. You can safely expose it to light while checking (a common question) — we promise it won't hurt the mycelium.
- Grain bags: cut the tape holding the top to the bottom, let it stand tall, and do a break-and-shake so colonized grain disperses further. Reshape into its block form and let nature do the rest.
- Jars: simply shake the jar to disperse the colonized grains.
If your mycelium is stalling, check your temperatures — too cold or too hot can throw things off. Big fluctuations disrupt the mycelium, but with daily observations you'll catch issues early and correct them.
4Transferring to Substrate
Pearl Oyster works best in a mixture of hardwood sawdust and soy hull — commonly called Master's Mix.
RULE OF THUMB — one colonized grain bag can be split among 6 bags of Master's Mix. For quicker colonization, split between 2.
Pearl Oysters won't benefit from a monotub bulk grow — this mushroom needs only specific areas to grow from. When the mycelium produces those amazing shelf-like Pearl Oysters we all love, it only needs a few spots exposed to oxygen so it directs its energy there. So Pearl Oysters are best grown in a bag, bucket, or log-inoculation setting. Below we cover the bag method.
Keep your temperatures around 70–80°F again — this is your second colonization phase.
- Put on vinyl gloves and spray down your workspace with isopropyl alcohol. Spray the outside of your colonized grain bags/jars and Master's Mix bags, then let dry.
- Cut the top of your colonized grain bag and Master's Mix bags, then pour your colonized grains into the Master's Mix bags.
- Heat-seal the top, or use clips, rubber bands, or zip ties to keep it closed. Leave some air inside to allow room to shake next.
- Shake the bag vigorously to disperse and break all colonized grains into the substrate.
- Other than a break-and-shake at ~50% coverage, there's little to do this phase — keep it dark and observe daily for contamination.
No fresh-air exchange right now — this mushroom still needs CO₂ to colonize again.
5The Fruiting Stage
Major props for getting this far in the life cycle of your Pearl Oyster! Soon all your hard work will pay off.
Once the Master's Mix bags are fully colonized and ready, there are a couple of methods to bring these mushrooms to viable life. You can comfortably range from 65–75°F during fruiting.
For all methods below, the basics stay the same:
- 8–12 hours of light per day. Sunlight isn't necessary but works — rotate the cake each day. LED or overhead light gives directional growth.
- Spray your cakes once daily. In a drier climate/home, you may need to spray 2–3 times daily.
- Have a fruiting tent with a humidifier? You won't need to spray daily — just keep humidity in the 80–100% range.
- After your first flush, rehydrate for a second/third flush by dunking your block in water for 18–24 hours. Don't exceed 24 hours or the cake starts to disintegrate.
Note: in a very humid climate, instead of dunking you can give your cakes a generous spray-down — cut the very top of the bag off, spray directly onto the cake, then tape the top down to the bottom afterward.
Method 1 — Fruiting Chamber (Monotub / Tote)
Set your bag up in a fruiting chamber — a monotub, tote, or any enclosed space where you can introduce humidity, light, and oxygen. This is especially effective because Pearl Oyster fruits well in bags inside a humidity-controlled chamber.
- If the bag top is heat-sealed, cut it open to spray water on the cake easily, then clip it closed when done.
- Using a monotub? Put filter patches on the sides to help with fresh air exchange, and open the lid at least 2× daily to release excess CO₂.
- No holes in your tote? That's okay — leave the lid open for a few minutes 2–3 times a day to release CO₂ and introduce oxygen.
Method 2 — Automated Grow Tent
A streamlined way to fruit Pearl Oysters is to place your fully colonized cakes into an automated grow tent. You don't need a dedicated tent just for Pearl Oysters, but if you already own one it's a great tool — just make sure other mushrooms sharing the tent have compatible climate needs.
- To promote fresh air exchange (FAE), periodically open the tent's door.
- Enhance your setup with a fan connected to the tent to draw in outside air — this ensures your Pearl Oysters get the oxygen they need for healthy fruiting.
- Automate the fan with a timer (15 minutes every 3–4 hours), adjusting based on humidity or if cakes start to dry out. Aim for 80%+ humidity.
You won't need to worry much about contamination in this stage unless your cakes go above 80°F (a danger zone for many molds), or you leave stagnant water at the bottom of your bags for days.
It's normal for a bit of water or yellow liquid ("metabolites") to collect at the bottom of your bag — just dump out excess buildup whenever you notice it.
