The King Blue Oyster (Pleurotus ostreatus variant) is a bold, visually striking oyster mushroom developed through selective cultivation to emphasize vibrant blue caps during early growth, thicker stems, and a heartier texture.

First popularized by growers in North America and Europe, King Blues gained traction for their resilience and cold-tolerant nature. Unlike standard Blue Oysters, King Blue Oysters thrive in cooler climates — an excellent choice for winter grows or cooler indoor spaces.

1What Grains Should I Use?

King Blue Oysters perform best on rye berries or a 5-grain mix. They also colonize well on oats when prepared properly. Straw is not recommended as a starter substrate for King Blues.

  • Always use properly sterilized or pasteurized grain.
  • Trusted pre-sterilized grain bags are available from Midwest Grow Kits and MycoLabs.
  • If sterilizing your own grain, ensure proper cook times based on grain type and volume.

2How Do I Inoculate?

Inoculation is straightforward. Use a still-air box (SAB), laminar flow hood, or the oven-door method. Gather isopropyl alcohol, paper towels, vinyl gloves, grain bags/jars, and your King Blue Oyster liquid culture syringe.

Be sure to check how many cc's to inject based on your jar or bag size.

  1. Put on vinyl gloves and sanitize your workspace with isopropyl alcohol.
  2. Wipe gloves down and allow all surfaces to dry.
  3. Sanitize the injection port on your grain bag or jar lid using alcohol swabs.
  4. Shake the liquid culture syringe vigorously.
  5. Attach the sterile needle and inject.

Pro Tip

After puncturing the port, hold the syringe at a 45° angle and gently rotate the bag or jar 360° to help distribute the liquid culture.

You may also shake grain jars vigorously after inoculation — this won't harm the culture.

3Colonization

Although King Blue Oysters are cold-loving during fruiting, colonization performs best around 70–80°F. Sustained temperatures above 80°F increase contamination risk.

Full colonization typically takes ~14 days. Perform a break-and-shake at 40–50% colonization to speed up growth.

  • Grain bags: cut the tape, let the bag stand tall, and perform a break-and-shake.
  • Grain jars: shake vigorously to redistribute colonized grain.
  • Keep in complete darkness until fully colonized.
  • Brief light exposure for inspection won't harm the mycelium.

If growth stalls, check your temperatures. Large fluctuations can slow or disrupt colonization.

4Transferring to Substrate

King Blue Oysters thrive on Master's Mix (hardwood sawdust + soy hull).

RULE OF THUMB — one colonized grain bag can inoculate 6 Master's Mix bags. For faster colonization, split into 2.

King Blues should remain in bags — monotubs aren't ideal, since these mushrooms require specific fruiting points.

  1. Sanitize your workspace, grain bags, and Master's Mix bags.
  2. Transfer colonized grain into Master's Mix bags.
  3. Seal the bag, leaving some air inside.
  4. Shake vigorously to distribute grain.
  5. Tape the top of the bag down to trap CO₂.
  6. At ~50% recolonization, untape, break-and-shake, retape, and allow full colonization.

No fresh-air exchange is needed during this phase.

5The Fruiting Stage

King Blue Oysters fruit best in cooler conditions — 55–65°F is ideal. Great locations include garages, cool basements, or winter grow rooms.

Fruiting conditions:

  • 8–12 hours of light daily (LED or ambient indoor lighting).
  • Mist once daily; increase to 2–3× if the environment is dry.
  • Aim for 80%+ humidity.
  • Fresh air exchange is essential during fruiting.
  • After harvest, dunk blocks for 18–24 hours between flushes.

Method 1 — Fruiting Chamber (Monotub / Tote)

  • Use filter patches for airflow.
  • If no holes exist, open the lid 2–3 times daily.

Method 2 — Automated Grow Tent

  • Use a fan and filter to introduce fresh air.
  • Automate airflow: ~15 minutes every 3–4 hours.
  • Place bags lower in the tent to benefit from CO₂ accumulation.

Avoid prolonged temps above 80°F or stagnant water buildup. Yellow liquid pooling is normal — just drain excess as needed.
