Psilocybe Azurescens Isolated Spore Syringe – 10cc | Spore Genetics
Also known as: “Flying Saucers,” “Azzies,” or “Blue Angels”
The Psilocybe azurescens Isolated Spore Syringe features one of the most famous and powerful wood-loving psilocybin mushrooms ever discovered. Known as the “Flying Saucer” mushroom for its distinctly domed, UFO-shaped cap, this species is a true icon of Pacific Northwest mycology—celebrated for its beauty, rarity, and remarkable resilience in coastal environments.
Psilocybe azurescens is native to a narrow stretch of the U.S. West Coast, primarily in Oregon and Washington. It thrives near the Columbia River Delta, with the first documented collections made in Hammond, Oregon, near Astoria. Populations extend south to Depoe Bay and north through Long Beach to Westport, Washington. Smaller groups have been found in Oregon’s Willamette Valley and even as far away as Stuttgart, Germany.
This wood-loving species flourishes in sandy soils rich with decaying woody debris and among coastal dune grasses, often producing dense clusters that form thick, white mycelial mats. Fruiting typically begins in late September and can continue into early January, depending on the climate. Beyond its native range, P. azurescens has been successfully cultivated for microscopy and taxonomy research in Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and across the United States—including California, New Mexico, Ohio, Oregon, Washington, Vermont, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania!
Morphological Features
Cap (Pileus): Broad, saucer-shaped, and smooth with a rich caramel-to-chestnut hue when moist, fading to light straw as it dries. The surface is glossy and often sticky due to a thin gelatinous layer (pellicle). Caps measure 3–10 cm and frequently feature a small raised bump (umbonate) in the center.
Gills (Lamellae): Densely spaced and attached to the stem, transitioning from pale brown to deep purplish-black as spores mature.
Stem (Stipe): Long, slender, and slightly curved, ranging 9–20 cm tall × 3–6 mm thick. The lower portion often displays white mycelial tufts with azure-blue tones, characteristic of this species.
Spores: Elliptical, dark purplish-brown to nearly black, measuring 12–13 × 6–8 µm under magnification.
