Known as the Périgord black truffle, Tuber melanosporum is one of the most prized edible fungi in the world and requires precise host tree associations, soil chemistry, drainage, and years of patience.

Expect no quick fruiting cycles—this is a project rather than a typical indoor kit. But when successful, it rewards with unmatched culinary value and prestige.

Cultivation Profile

Growth Characteristics:

Ectomycorrhizal fungus forming symbiosis with tree roots (e.g., oaks, hazel) rather than standard indoor substrates.

Requires alkaline, calcareous soil (pH ~ 7.5-8.5), excellent drainage, and specific climate and seasonal cues.

Time to first harvest often 4–10 years after inoculation of host trees.

Ideal Conditions

Colonization/Inoculation Phase: Use host tree seedlings inoculated under controlled conditions. Soil temperature, mineral content, and mycorrhizal scenario all matter.

Substrate/Host: Live oak, hazel, or other compatible hardwoods planted in calcareous (limestone) soil, with good drainage and suitable pH.

Fruiting Conditions: Typically forms underground (hypogeous) fruiting bodies, triggered by soil temperature cycles, moisture, and host-tree conditions rather than standard indoor temperature/humidity ranges.

Flushes/Harvests: Irregular; may take years. Fruiting is highly variable and dependent on orchard conditions.
