Best Ways To Dry Mushrooms After Harvesting

There are quite a few ways to dry your mushrooms after harvesting. Some methods are definitely better than others when it comes to ensuring dry mushrooms that will store optimally. It is super important when it comes to drying your mushrooms because if they aren’t dried thoroughly, you’ll come to find some unwanted molding to your precious harvests that you should be enjoying. Below I’ll give you the scoop on the best ways of drying your mushrooms!

Dehydrator -

Mycolabs Dehydrator

The best way of drying your mushrooms will come from a food dehydrator. You can dehydrate at a consistent temperature and this will allow you to dry mushrooms faster. While dehydrators are the fastest route, DO NOT overdo the temperature. Overheating can lead to crispy mushrooms on the outside but the insides will still be moist. Staying around 130-140 Fahrenheit is a great drying temperature.

Depending on how big the mushrooms are, it can take a couple of days to fully dehydrate. If you want to speed up the process further, you may also choose to cut up the mushrooms into smaller pieces before placing them into the dehydrator. To check and see if your mushrooms are ready, try to snap the mushroom in half, it should be like snapping a cracker. If the mushroom doesn’t snap easily and does more of a bend, then it will need more time in the dehydrator.

Other Ways To Dry Mushrooms -

There are a couple other ways you can successfully dry mushrooms without using a dehydrator. The first one we would recommend is using desiccants and silica packets and then placing your mushrooms in some kind of tote/jar. This duo will help the mushrooms dry within about a weekspan or so but can also vary depending how big the mushrooms are. Cutting the mushrooms into smaller pieces makes the drying time move a bit faster and same thing as the dehydrator method, you’ll know when they’re dry if they snap in half like a cracker.

The other method we recommend would be to dry them in the oven. You’ll cut your mushrooms into smaller pieces and place them on a cooking sheet and you’ll place them into your oven at 100-120 degrees Fahrenheit and check on them every hour until fully dry. Low and slow always wins the race when it comes to drying mushrooms. This method definitely requires you to stick around at home but the outcome will be all worth it.
